Clarkson Ignite: Make.
Innovation Spaces
The Innovation Hub at the Schuler Education Resource Center (ERC) promotes entrepreneurial mindsets and innovative skillsets while supporting academic life for all students at Clarkson University. The Innovation Hub houses resources including the Clarkson Library, Dorf Makerspace, and the Digital Making Suite, and departments dedicated to supporting student life and academic success.
The Dorf Makerspace
At the Makerspace we provide the equipment and opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to collaborate, innovate, learn, and make. The Makerspace is operated by Maker Mentors, Clarkson students trained on the equipment and who oversee the safe operation of the space itself. Maker Mentors are available during the Makerspace’s open hours to assist with learning about the equipment and utilizing the space for research, projects, making, etc.
How can you access the Makerspace?
Maker Mentors provide a safety overview for all new users and ask the user to sign a safety agreement before any equipment can be utilized. Individuals can do this by stopping in during open hours or attending one of the workshops tailored to showcase the equipment in the space.
The Studio
At The Studio we focus on generating and developing ideas. The Studio’s unique environment allows students to communicate, visualize and iterate their ideas in a dynamic and comfortable space. Our resources expand the physical space and allow students and teams to collaborate in new and creative ways.
The Studio’s customizable work areas and collaboration zones make it easy for students to build the spaces they need. The Mural Whiteboard software allows students from anywhere in the world to work together and collaborate effectively to solve their challenges.
If you have an open-ended project or problem, The Studio is here to help you with the space you need!
The Digital Making Suite
The Digital Making Suite provides resources for students, faculty, and staff to create and edit digital content, such as photos, videos, music, and podcasts. The suite consists of four rooms located on the second floor of the Innovation Hub in the ERC that allow you to focus on producing and editing visual content, audio content, and video recordings.
The Digital Making Suite is operated by trained Clarkson students, Digital Mentors, who are happy to assist you with any stage of your project during open hours, and can help you learn about our resources and using the Digital Making spaces.
How can you access the Digital Making Suite?
The Digital Making Suite hosts open hours several days a week. During these times one of our Digital Mentors will be available to assist with your projects or provide further training on how to use the space and its resources.
If you are interested in using the space outside of open hours, our Digital Mentors can train you in the proper use of the equipment. Training is available during open hours; however, if these hours do not fit your schedule contact us at innovationhub@clarkson.edu to request a training session with a Digital Mentor. Once you have been trained you will be able to access and reserve rooms for your project using the University’s Virtual EMS program.
The Cube - Shipley Center
The Cube offers the following resources to students:
- Supervised discretionary funds
- Eligibility to apply for full-Ignition grants
- A dedicated project team
- Access to Shipley Center full-time staff and Shipley's Subject Matter Experts
- External business plan competition sponsorship
To become a member of the Cube, students must participate in one of several pitch events held throughout the academic year to demonstrate not only that they have a great idea, but also that they are truly dedicated to developing it. The students from each pitch who are selected to join the Cube then become members of the program for one full year. Student teams that successfully accomplish their Cube goals are eligible to apply for re-entry into the program in order to continue the acceleration of their idea.
